Canyon Leadership Course
Take the lead on your next adventure. The Canyon Leadership course teaches the skills necessary to safely lead others in a canyoneering environment. Gain the confidence to take friends, family, kids, or anyone less experienced on your next canyoneering trip. Learn to manage the unique challenges that come with leading a group.

What You Will Learn
Passing Knots
In canyoneering, efficiency and safety are key, and learning systems that require only one person—typically the leader—to pass a knot can significantly streamline the descent. Some team members may not know how to pass a knot themselves. The key is to set up systems that minimize risk and ensure that each team member can descend safely.
Group Gear Management
Effective group gear management is crucial for safety, efficiency, and overall success. Leaders must ensure that all essential equipment—such as ropes, harnesses, carabiners, rappel devices, anchors, and emergency gear—is accounted for, distributed properly, and in good condition.
Handling Lost or Broken Gear
Handling lost or broken gear requires adaptability, problem-solving, and preparedness. If a critical piece of gear is lost or broken, the group must assess the situation and determine safe alternatives using backup equipment or creative rigging solutions.
Group Efficiency
A skilled leader optimizes efficiency by assigning roles based on team members’ strengths, streamlining transitions between rappels, and minimizing downtime at technical sections. Clear communication, pre-established systems for rope management, and proper sequencing of rappels help reduce bottlenecks and keep the group moving steadily.
Lowering Systems
A well-designed lowering system allows a leader or rescuer to manage a teammate’s descent with precision, ensuring safety while conserving energy. Unlike a contingency anchor, a lowering system is specifically designed to actively control the descent of a person from the start, rather than allowing them to rappel independently. It is commonly used for assisting injured, inexperienced, or unconscious team members who cannot manage their own rappel.
Canyoneering with Kids
Canyoneering with kids requires careful planning, patience, and an emphasis on safety and fun. Allowing kids to progress at their own pace and making adaptations ensures they remain engaged and comfortable. By adjusting techniques to match their ability and providing a supportive, fun environment, leaders can help kids develop confidence and skills while enjoying the adventure of canyoneering.
